As part of its growing focus on sustainability, Southern Institute of Technology (SIT) has introduced RecycleKiwi recycling station on campus, making it easier for staff and students to reduce waste and recycle correctly.

With support from Southland Regional Manager Steve Willis and Quality Assurance Co-ordinator Josh Bekhuis, the new initiative is currently being trialled with a three-bin RecycleKiwi station in the institute’s H Block café area.

SIT says CrestClean’s passion for the RecycleKiwi programme and understanding of sustainability made the decision an easy one, especially as the institute begins rolling out its own sustainability initiatives across campus.

The station has been designed to make recycling simple and accessible, while also helping students and staff understand what can and can’t be recycled. Southern Institute of Technology hopes the rollout will build momentum for its wider sustainability programme in the future.

By introducing dedicated recycling stations, SIT aims to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill while encouraging better recycling habits among students.

Even in the early stages, the response has been positive, with teams from marketing, student services and administration all getting behind the launch and helping spread the word around campus.

A RecycleKiwi station has been set up in the H Block café area at SIT.

Steve, Josh and franchise owners Carlotta and Harold Magannig have worked closely with SIT throughout the rollout, helping with everything from the station design to choosing the best location on campus. SIT says the CrestClean Southland team have been quick to help whenever needed and have provided valuable advice throughout the setup process.

With the first station now up and running, the trial is an exciting first step in SIT’s sustainability journey and could pave the way for more RecycleKiwi stations across campus in the future.
