Glenbervie School’s thoughtful gesture recognises outstanding cleaning duo

Whangārei CrestClean franchise owner John Salele receives a thoughtful gift from staff and students at Glenbervie School

Whangārei franchise owners, John and Miriama, have been cleaning Glenverbie School for less than a year, but they’ve already made a lasting impression on staff and students.

Described as “part of the team” by Office Administrator, Wilma Michelsen, John and Miriama are highly valued members of the Glenbervie School community.

To show their appreciation for John and Miriama’s outstanding work, Glenbervie School’s management team organised a heartfelt gesture for the franchise owners. Students created thoughtful thank you cards, and staff assembled two large hampers to acknowledge and thank John and Miriama.

“We are a school that’s all about well-being, making people feel special and taking the time to thank those who make it nice for us,” says Wilma.

“It’s nice to get a personal touch from the students. It just makes all the difference.”

For the staff and students at Glenbervie School, their appreciation for John and Miriama’s presence goes far beyond their cleaning. Wilma says they bring with them a warmth and positivity that lights up the school.

“They’ve become part of our team. They come in with a smile, and they make an effort to make a connection with us. And on top of that, they do a good job!”

The cards and hampers were a lovely surprise for John and Miriama who clean the school’s 10 classrooms, hall, administration areas, library and bathrooms every day. As they’re always ready to go the extra mile without hesitation, Wilma says nothing is ever a problem for John and Miriama.

“There have been things that aren’t in their job description but they’re always happy to do it for us,” she says.

“There are never any problems and it’s great for our children.”

John sailed to New Zealand from Fiji in 2015 while working as a Marine Engineer. When he met Miriama, he knew New Zealand would become his new home.

After securing a three-year contract with the Mid Northern Rugby Club and a role as a Corrections Officer in Kaikohe, John gained residency and eventually settled in Whangārei, where he and Miriama now live with their two children.

John and Miriama purchased a CrestClean franchise three years ago to generate more income and help them get ahead.

“I needed something that would get me onto the property ladder and give me financial freedom,” says John.

Having arrived in New Zealand with very little, John often reflects on how much his life has changed.

“I came here with $750 and faith,” he says.

“I’m very pleased about how far I’ve come. I finally got into the property market and bought a house last year.”

John also works with the Pacifika community, helping with housing, health and immigration issues. He also organises workshops and programmes that provide financial advice and youth mentoring to the Pacifika community.

John loves working with the Pacifika community but enjoys the additional income from his CrestClean franchise.

“I really love my job, but I like the flexibility with CrestClean. And I get a moment of peace when I go and clean,” he laughs.

The heartfelt gesture from Glenbervie School is a testament to John and Miriama’s friendly nature and high standards. As they expand their business, they’re sure to leave their mark as an invaluable Whangārei cleaning team.
