Going the extra mile is something Salendra Chetty does without a second thought.

The CrestClean business owner loves working at Maunu Primary School, where he’s treated like a member of staff.

But as well as receiving regular feedback about the high quality of his cleaning, Salendra loves to get involved in school life and he helps out in many different ways.

The part-time farmer recently brought in a hen and some newly-hatched chicks so students could get a hands-on experience of Mother Nature’s work.

For teacher Suzie Gray it was an invaluable exercise for her class, says Maunu Primary School Principal Paul Shepherd.

“Suzie likes to do things that are to do with authentic learning, so the chickens fitted in really well with her class.

“It’s great to have someone like Salendra who doesn’t just come in, clean and go out, he’s a real integral part of who we are here. It works really well.

“It speaks volumes for Salendra in terms of how he feels about the school. He makes those associations with the teachers and carries things through to that extent.

“He’s not just a cleaner at the school, he’s fully part of the staff and the whole fabric of the school.”

Salendra says bringing the chicks to school was rewarding. “I took along a hen and some chickens and the kids were very happy to see them.

“It was nice to show the kids where the chickens come from and how we feed them and look after them.”

Edward Irving, CrestClean’s Northland Regional Manager, says many of the company’s business owners pride themselves on giving back to the communities they serve.

“This is a fantastic example of our franchisees getting involved in their community. They are not just cleaners, they are part of the school and school life.”
